Are you looking for patron-driven eBook acquisition?
Patron-driven acquisition is an easier process to implement at your institution than you might think. Elsevier has several options that allow flexibility in the amount of content, budget investment, and length of access, based on the needs of your library’s specific user community.
With these patron-driven models you can directly involve your users and align their interests with the eBook purchasing process without them having to change their behavior or make manual requests. You, the librarian, still retain the ultimate decision-making power for which titles are purchased in perpetuity based on analysis of usage statistics.
Elsevier's range of choices for patron-driven acquisition of eBooks on ScienceDirect are outlined below, starting with the broadest swath of content down to the most customizable option. When you’re ready to take the next step, click here to request a consultation on tailoring a solution to meet your library’s needs.
An overview of ScienceDirect's patron-driven models
How does it work?
Fees paid up front for the models below can be used to select titles to keep in perpetuity however often you’d like—think of it as a "bank" you can draw from for the duration of the access period. It’s a great way to get the most current, relevant content in front of your researchers while also building your library’s archival assets year after year. ScienceDirect provides the tools to view and analyze usage data on a self-serve basis, though your sales representatives can guide you through the selection process as well.
MARC records are provided for free to help users to discover the content you’re subscribed to, and marketing resources are offered to boost awareness and engagement in the content. ScienceDirect is mobile-friendly and DRM-free, so your users can download chapters as PDFs or ePubs to their device of choice to read offline.
Unlock a large amount of content right away, that grows each year with the Freedom Collection.
Some libraries need the widest possible range of content, reducing the frustration of turnaways. When your institution signs up you have immediate access to the current year’s eBooks as they publish, plus four years of previous content for a price that is much less than purchasing the full collections each year in perpetuity. When you renew each year it is a predictable price, and you retain access to all five years of content plus the new year. At the end of each year, select the content you need based on actual usage and keep it forever.
The 2016 Freedom Collection offers full access to more than 4,000 eBooks from 2012 - 2016 across 23 different subjects in science, technology and medicine (view full 2016 Freedom Collection list). Need even more content, or looking to start digitizing older print books in your library to clear shelf space? You now have the option to add eBook backlist content from 2011 to pre-2007 to your Freedom Collection. This add-on includes 9,400 titles from over 130 ScienceDirect eBooks backlist collections and represents many aligned subject areas (view full Freedom Collection Books Backlist).
A smaller amount of targeted content, also grows each year.
Not all libraries need all the content that Elsevier has available. With our Insights Library, you select from 11 priority research areas.

Evidence-based Selection (EBS)
The most customized option to give you precisely what your users need.
Evidence-based Selection lets you choose exactly which subject collections you want to "try-before-you-buy.” For a minimal up-front fee you get a year of access to your choice of content. At year’s end, select content based on detailed usage reports, the closest thing to actually polling your patrons individually about their preferences.
Reference Modules are a reflection of what's most important in the research community, with content hand-selected and kept up-to-date by an expert panel of research peers.
Reference Modules represent the next generation in publishing, providing a focused collection of the most current interdisciplinary content from the Elsevier Reference Works. The entire collection is also reviewed regularly by independent experts who update any outdated content with the latest research. They even stamp the articles with the date of the review. So researchers never have to worry that the information is stale or obsolete.
Choose from up to 5 of these curated reference collections and get access to all archive, updated, and new articles as they publish (view list of available Reference Modules). Your yearly renewal fee can be used to choose static reference works from the module to keep in perpetuity whenever you want, while still continuing to get the most up-to-date articles as they publish.
