Souhail R. Al-Abed

Dr. Souhail R. Al-Abed holds a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), USA. His Ph.D. research concentrated on effects of redox reactions in the chemistry of iron and manganese in soil. While in graduate school, he had the opportunity to working in a biochemistry and genetic laboratory as an assistant for projects on the effect of temperature variations on photosynthesis on algae. He then joined the University of Virginia in Charlottesville (UVA) for a postdoctoral position to work on sulfur biogeochemistry on understanding the effect of sulfate reduction bacteria and the redox chemistry of iron on sulfur speciation in wetlands along a barrier island of coastal Virginia.
After completing his postdoc at UVA, Dr. Al-Abed I joined the University of Cincinnati (UC) as a research associate, and later as a research assistant professor. In UC his research concentrated on developing innovative remediation processes and environmental waste evaluation. After his tenure at UC he joined the US Environmental Protection Agency/Office of Research and Development/National Risk Management Research Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA as a Research Chemist. Dr. Al-Abed scientific contributions have been used by the EPA Program Offices to develop guidelines and policies and by the EPA Regional Offices to implement efficient and cost-effective remedial strategies, evalute and manage legacy and emerging materials, risk of using nanomaterials in consumer products.
To date, Dr. Al-Abed authored and coauthored more than 82 peer-review journal articles and six book chapters and received to date more than 2700 citations. He has been active member of the ACS and served as a program chair for from 2009 to 2017 and currently the Chair-Elect in the Division of Environmental Chemistry. He Also a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
