José Virgílio Matos Figueira Cruz

Dr José Virgílio Cruz is a Professor in the Geosciences Department, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of the Azores, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, where he served in several responsible positions, such as department head and member of the rectoral team. He is a researcher at the Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment, where besides being a member of the scientific board is also the responsible for the Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology group. From 2004 to 2008 he served as Azores water resources and land management director, and for many years was member of the national and regional water councils.
José Virgílio is a geologist with a strong background in hydrogeology, and he conducted fundamental and applied research in the interdisciplinary field of water science for more than twenty five years, looking for the water cyle in a holistic approach, along which participated in several research projects and published actively in journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. Additionally, he often acted as consultant in projects for public bodies and private companies in water resources, land management and environmental impact projects. He has specific focus on groundwater systems, groundwater and surface water geochemistry and pollution, and water management and planning.
