Santiago Canals is staff scientist of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and leads the Laboratory of Plasticity of Brian Networks in the Instituto de Neurociencias (CSIC-UMH) at Alicante, where he is the Director of the Cellular and Systems Neuroscience Unit. He joined the CSIC in 2009 after a postdoctoral stay in the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen (Germany) working with Prof. Nikos Logothetis and supported by the Human Frontiers Science Program Organization. Since then he has been working on the mechanisms of information transfer and directionality in brain networks, with special attention to the regulatory role of interneurons and synaptic plasticity, and combining molecular, electrophysiological and functional imaging (fMRI) tools to bridge the gap between local processing and long range communication. He is Associate member of the Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems (cCNS) at The University of Edinburgh (UK) and Young Investigator of the European Neuroscience Institutes Network (ENI-Net).
