World Tuberculosis Day 2018: Contribute to End TB

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide; according to the World Health Organization, 104 million people fell ill with TB in 2016, and 1.7 million died from the disease. TB is curable and there is a vaccine available, but with increasing threat from multidrug-resistant strains of the bacterium that causes TB, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, researchers are working hard to develop more effective treatments and prevention measures.

On 24 March 2018, World TB Day calls for an end to TB. The annual event marks the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch discovered M. tuberculosis as the cause of TB. This year’s theme – “Wanted: Leaders for a TB-free world” – encourages commitment from politicians, community leaders, civil society advocates, health workers, NGOs and those affected by TB to end the disease.

Researchers around the world are working hard to develop more effective treatments and prevention measures. In this collection, you can read recent research on TB – the causative bacterium, the disease, its prevention and cure – published in a range of Elsevier’s journals. The articles are free to access until he 24th of June 2018.
