João Rocha , Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal
Since 1999, Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Aveiro, Portugal, and Director of CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. Ph.D. in 1991 from the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, followed by a one year post-doc in the same department. ‘Agregação’ (Habilitation) in 1997, University of Aveiro, Portugal. He has published over 450 research papers and 4 patents, which have received ca. 12,000 citations.
Rocha is member of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) and of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and ChemPubSoc Europe. Received the Madinabeitia-Lourenço award from the Real Sociedad Española de Química (2015) and the prize for Scientific Excellence from the Portuguese Science Foundation (2005). He was member of the National Science and Technology Council (advising the Prime Minister, 2014-15). In 1990, he received a prize from Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
He Chairs the Commission on Inorganic and Mineral Structures of the International Union of Crystallography and consultant for the Commission on NMR Crystallography and Related Methods. Member of the editorial boards of Chemistry – a European Journal, Solid State NMR, and Solid State Sciences. He is Royal Society of Chemistry Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Book Series Editor.
His present research interests encompass microporous transition metal and lanthanide silicates, photoluminescent lanthanide-bearing materials, and Metal Organic Frameworks for sensing applications, including nanothermometry; nanosystems for multimodal (magnetic resonance, optical and thermometry) imaging and small molecules drug delivery; solid-state NMR and X-ray diffraction.
