Wim H. M. van der Poel, DVM, PhD, is Professor of ‘Emerging and Zoonotic viruses’ at Wageningen University. He graduated in veterinary medicine at Utrecht University in 1988 and got his PhD at the same University in 1995.

Thereafter he worked at the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) in Bilthoven before he moved to Wageningen Bioveterinary Research in Lelystad in 2004. The research work of Prof. Van der Poel involves research in production animals and wildlife reservoirs focussing on three areas: New and emerging viruses, foodborne and zoonotic viruses and ‘Global One Health’. Prof. Van der Poel has (co)-authored more than 170 scientific research papers.
