What's your role in helping the company achieve its goals?
I joined Elsevier as an account manager for the corporate markets in Mexico. I’m based in Mexico City. My role is to really put Elsevier on the map, to help the researchers at commercial companies really understand who we are. Some of them who do know us just know us as a publisher, so they don’t know we have solutions that can help them with their research and their projects. That’s basically what my role is in the sales part: to really create awareness about what Elsevier does.
What brought you to Elsevier?
I worked at an IT company before this job. I chose Elsevier because I really liked the challenge of opening new markets for Elsevier and being the leader — the pioneer — in that area. I really love the company; I love the focus we have for customers. Elsevier is really trying to understand what the customer needs are in order for us to really provide the real solution they need and to maintain that customer and have long-term relationships. I think that’s the main focus of Elsevier, and I like that.
What was it like getting started with Elsevier?
It was kind of a rush, but that’s what excites me. I was changing to another company, and I was changing the industry that I was working on. It’s been really interesting to get to know the industry, get to know how it works, get to know the products and how I can apply all my background and knowledge here. It’s been quite interesting -- and fun, too.
How does working at Elsevier help you make a difference in the world?
We’re in content solutions for scientists, and really what makes the whole world go around is new discoveries — new things to really develop a country. We are able to provide information to the scientists who are day by day working and researching to increase development or to develop a device that may help in health care. The most rewarding thing is to know that we are actually providing that information, and that information is going to help build something bigger. I don’t see myself as just a salesperson; I see my work as contributing to really help develop a country.
How has working at Elsevier helped you achieve a positive work-life balance?
I really like to balance my work life and my personal life. I play flag football, and I have to train, and I have to really be in shape, and Elsevier has really let me do that. I can work in the mornings and in the afternoons go to the gym or go to trainings and be able to really have that balance and enjoy my family. I may have to leave the office early because I have to do something personal, and it doesn’t matter; you can do that. Maybe you can catch up later in the evening to finish your work. I’m thankful for that flexibility and openness of Elsevier because it really lets you distribute your time in the different areas that you need to.
