Malaysia Airlines Flight 17: A message of condolence
Many of the passengers were members of the research community

On Thursday, we learned that Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, had crashed in Ukraine. Although Elsevier is headquartered in the Netherlands and has many employees there, there were no Elsevier employees on board. We do know, however, of several passengers who have either authored, edited or reviewed for us. In addition, it has been reported that many of the passengers were traveling to an international AIDS conference, among them some of the world's foremost researchers. These are people who contributed greatly to the advancement of health and science, and we join the scientific and health community and the world in mourning their loss. We offer our profound condolences to the families of all the passengers.
