Description

Phthalonitrile polymers and their composites exhibit good flammability and high temperature properties compared to other polymeric systems, such as polyimides. In addition, specific phthalonitriles have outstanding processability, water resistance, oxidative stability, and retention of mechanical properties at temperatures over 400 oC. This book summarises the latest research in relation to these polymers, and provides information to enable materials scientists and engineers to deploy these polymers in the real world.

Firstly, the book will give precise details on the synthesis and preparation techniques for the key phthalonitrile monomers. All curing techniques will be discussed, along with blends and copolymers of phthalonitrile with other polymeric materials such as epoxy, benzoxazine, and bismaleimide. Fiber and particle based phthalonitrile micro and nanocomposites will be fully discussed.

These materials have potential in a range of applications, including lightweight automobiles, ships, oil rigs, aircraft, wind blades, high temperature bearings, valves, battery and electronic casings, fire resistant textiles, robotic and autonomous firefighting on ships, ammunition casings and storage containers, and fire-resistant building materials.
