Hormones, Brain and Behavior, Third Edition offers a state-of-the-art overview of hormonally-mediated behaviors, including an extensive discussion of the effects of hormones on insects, fish, amphibians, birds, rodents, and humans. Entries have been carefully designed to provide a valuable source of information for students and researchers in neuroendocrinology and those working in related areas, such as biology, psychology, psychiatry, and neurology.
This third edition has been substantially restructured to include both foundational information and recent developments in the field. Continuing the emphasis on interdisciplinary research and practical applications, the book includes articles aligned in five main subject sections, with new chapters included on genetic and genomic techniques and clinical investigations.
This reference provides unique treatment of all major vertebrate and invertebrate model systems with excellent opportunities for relating behavior to molecular genetics. The topics cover an unusual breadth (from molecules to ecophysiology), ranging from basic science to clinical research, making this reference of interest to a broad range of scientists in a variety of fields.
- Contributors from 16 different countries and more than 70 institutions
- Unlike any other hormone reference on the market Hormones, Brain and Behavior addresses hormone effects in all major vertebrate and non-vertebrate models
- A timely, current reference on an emerging field with each chapter providing an in-depth exploration of the topic
- Discusses molecular aspects of hormone function, systems, development, and hormone-related diseases
- Addresses hormone effects in both the developing and adult nervous system
- Mammalian and Non-mammalian Hormone-behavior Systems
- Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Hormone Actions on Behavior
- Development of Hormone-dependent Neuronal Systems
- Hormone/Behavior Relations of Clinical Importance
Researchers, students, fellows, and academic clinicians in biology, psychology, psychiatry, neurology, and endocrinology. This work will appeal to agricultural students and professionals, fisheries personnel, physiologists, biochemists, anatomists, and geneticists

Donald W. Pfaff heads the Laboratory of Neurobiology and Behavior at The Rockefeller University. He received his scientific training at Harvard University and MIT and is a member of the National Academy of Science and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Pfaff's laboratory focuses on steroid hormones and brain function, interactions among transcription factors, luteinizing-hormone-releasing-hormone neurons, and genes influencing neuronal functions. He is the author or coauthor of over 10 books and more than 800 research publications.

"This is a monumental five volume set- to the best of my knowledge, the first of its kind- written by a large team of experts. This set belongs in every academic medical library. The last two volumes are of special interest to endocrinologists, psychologists and psychiatrists, the first two volumes more to zoologists. The editors, contributors and the publisher are to be commended for this up-to-date, well written and well referenced work." --THE JOURNAL OF ENDOCRINE GENETICS, 2004
"...the first of its kind...this set belongs in every academic medical library...the editors, contributors and the publisher are to be commended for this up-to-date, well written and well referenced work." --JOURNAL OF PEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM, 2002
"Far-reaching in scope and certainly indispensable to researchers in many intersecting fields...Four editors have brought together an international cast of contributors to create this comprehensive volume work." --BOOK NEWS, 2002
"This monumental work contains more than 900 pages organized into 106 chapters that collect an impressive amount of information...A worthwhile addition to any institution with a graduate program." --CHOICE, 2003
