About the Editor

Sanjay Gupte

Dr. Sanjay Gupte is the Director of Gupte Hospital and Centre for Research in Reproduction. An extremely successful practitioner, he has set new trends in the practice of the subject with an apt balance of quality, documentation and highest standards of care. His fields of interest are achievement of standardization in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology, high-risk obstetrics, fetal medicine and infertility.

Dr. Sanjay Gupte is the past President of FOGSI (The Federation of the Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India) for the year 2010. He has been in practice for more than 30 years now, both in the private as well as the public sector. He is trained as a lawyer and is the pioneer of the medico-legal movement from the gynecologist perspective in the country. He has been instrumental in the inception of the national medico-legal conferences which are eagerly awaited as they have been responsible for increased awareness of ethics in practice. Being an expert on many legal committees and an expert on the PNDTA committee his advice is sought all over and also through the medico-legal helpline which is a 24 × 7 service that he has conceptualized.

A thorough academician, he is a favorite teacher and has served the Sassoon General Hospitals and the BJ Medical College as Associate Professor. He has many presentations and publications to his credit. He has had a very active career in the Federation and has been the Chairman of the Ethical and Medicolegal Committee, FOGSI. He has also been the Senior Vice President of FOGSI and the Honorary Secretary of the ICOG. He has been an ardent researcher and recipient of various awards at the different forums of the FOGSI – Ethicon Scholar in 1979, Indumati Zaveri Prize at AICOG 1979 for Best Paper Presentation, Dr. P.K. Devi National Prize 1980, Best FOGSI Committee Prize – Dr. Hansotia Award – 2003. He has been the man behind the National Eclampsia Registry the FOGSI-ICOG initiative and is the National Coordinator for the same which has accumulated a data of over 1 lakh eclampsia patients in the country.

As the President, through the ‘Reaching the Unreached Initiative’, he has been instrumental in reaching out not only to the members of the Federation but also to the patients and most importantly to the bureaucrats with some important interventions, which have today seen the light of the day. Use of IVIS for treatment of anemia, availability of Magnesium sulfate injection and training the medical personnel to use it are some important examples of these interventions. During his tenure as President of FOGSI, Dr. Gupte was the driving force behind the launch of a national initiative called ‘Save the Mother & Newborn India Project’ in collaboration with Government of India, IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) NNF (National Neonatology Forum). This involved reaching the antenatal care to the unreached mothers in remote parts of India, followed by delivery care and post natal care including contraception. This has taken off well and is hoped to be a major national movement in near future. The Government of India program of safe motherhood is based on this initiative.

Currently he also holds positions as the member of the ICMR Committee, member of the Ethics Committee of the MMC and the MCI and has been awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists by the Honoris Causa, the highest award of the college for his exemplary work in the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and for the health of women.

His students and admirers look up to this iconic figure for inspiration and guidance. In addition to being a proficient practitioner and a visionary, he is also trained as a lawyer to keep in tune with the wave of medico-legal issues that had hit the medical profession that time.
