This special volume of Progress in Brain Research aims to introduce and discuss the most relevant and recent interdisciplinary research on the influence of cerebral lateralization on cognition within an evolutionary framework. Articles will focus on behavioural and neuroimaging evidence from humans and non-human animals considering the role of cerebral lateralization in: 1) the evolution of higher cognitive function in modern humans, 2) the development of cognition in children and 3) the early diagnosis and therapeutic interventions of children at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders.
