Endeavor, Elsevier Engineering Information develop XML gateway for reliable search, retrieval of resources in Engineering Village 2™

Partnered development provides end users federated searching from ENCompass.

Des Plaines, IL, 26 August 2004 - Endeavor Information Systems and Elsevier Engineering Information announced the successful results of a partnership to develop an XML gateway from Endeavor’s ENCompass for Resource Access federated search system to access content sources hosted on Engineering Village 2. The collaboration leverages Endeavor’s expertise as a provider of advanced library technology systems and Elsevier Engineering Information’s extensive reach into the engineering marketplace to provide customers with solutions for improving research.

Via Endeavor’s ENCompass for Resource Access, researchers can now perform federated searches of Engineering Village 2 resources including Compendex®, Inspec® and U.S. National Technical Information Service (NTIS) databases. Engineering Village 2 is the premiere web-based discovery platform for the engineering community. The XML gateway to Engineering Village 2 is currently available with ENCompass for Resource Access release 3.5.

Designed for federated search and retrieval of non-MARC formatted information, XML gateway search technology is cited as a sophisticated and mature method for reliable search and retrieval. With this latest development, Engineering Village 2 is for the first time a federated search target and can now return structured data for display in the ENCompass for Resource Access federated search results.

“We developed the XML gateway for Engineering Village 2 because it is extremely important to us that our customers can use and search our content in the ways which best meet their needs,” said Rafael Sidi, Vice-President of Engineering Publishing, Elsevier Engineering Information. “I am pleased that our customers who use ENCompass for Resource Access can take advantage of our XML gateway to provide engineering researchers with yet another option for accessing industry leading content.”

“Library end users benefit when popular and dependable resources such as those in Engineering Village 2 are available through a fast and intuitive federated search,” said Verne Coppi, Endeavor Vice-President of Development. “Endeavor’s ENCompass for Resource Access employs multi-protocol searching for dependable access to information regardless of available search methodology. To ensure end users have a reliable method to access information, federated search in ENCompass for Resource Access is accomplished with Z39.50 connections, XML gateway connections and HTTP Search Engine (HSE) connections. Endeavor is proud to partner with Engineering Information to provide user-focused access to resources through an ENCompass for Resource Access XML gateway.”
