Description
This proceedings presents the lectures of the 2nd Workshop on Paediatric Osteology from the "European Paediatric Osteology Working Group."
Specialists representing the areas of physics, engineering, nutrition, sports physiology, biochemistry, internal medicine, rheumatology,
and pediatrics exchanged research findings addressing the widespread health problem presented by osteoporosis. The interdisciplinary
discussions were primarily aimed towards the theme..."the role that the prevention of osteoporosis plays during childhood and adolescence."
The most important chronic diseases and therapeutic measures coupled with personal experiences were reported. The presentation also
supplements the 1st workshop in 1995, correlating the current status of diagnosis and procedures. Recent developments were introduced,
with emphasis on the sonographic methods for the examination of the skeletal system. The investigation of the musclex system, the development
of the skeletal system during puberty, and the influence of nutrition were also discussed. New diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities
for primary skeletal diseases such as idiopathic scoliosis, morbus Scheuermannm, X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets and juvenile osteoporosis
were identified. This book relates new aspects for understanding the skeletal system with special focus in risk groups of children and
adolescents for osteoporosis.
