from 1994 he had been Conseiller in the Advisory Unit to the Secretary General of the Organisation for Econimic Co-operation and Development,
Paris where he headed up the OECD work on International Aviation. He was at that time on leave from being Professor of Applied Economics
and Transport and VSB Visiting Professor of Transport and the Environment at the Tinbergen Institute, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Professor
Button has previously held visiting academic posts at the University of British Columbia and the University of California at Berkeley.
In the two years prior to his secondment to the OECD he completed consultancy work for the ICAO in Brazil as well as studies for the
European Union and the World Bank. He was a director of the consultancy firm Pearce, Sharp and Associates. Recently, Professor Button
has also independently completed a number of commercial consultancy studies for, amongst others, Transport Canada, British Waterways
Board, International Civil Aviation Organisation and the European Conference of Ministers of Transport. He was Advisor to the UK House
of Common Transport Committee and Chaired the Chartered Institute of Transport's study of Motorway tolling.
Professor Button has published,
or has in press, some seventy books and over 400 academic papers in the field of transport economics, transport planning and industrial
organisation. He is editor of the international academic journal Transportation Research D: Transport and the Environment and
of the Journal of Air Transport Management and is on the editorial boards of eight other journals. He is on the scientific committee
of the World Conference on Transport Research and Advisory Board of the Air Transport Research Group.
