Peer Review Policy Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry
The practice of peer review is to ensure that good science is published. It is an objective process at the heart of good scholarly publishing and is carried out on all reputable scientific journals. Our referees therefore play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and all manuscripts are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below.
Special issues are also subject to peer review and may involve the assistance of Guest Editors. Authors contributing to these projects will receive full details of the peer review process from the JEC Editor in charge. The Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry applies the same criteria for acceptance of manuscripts to all types of submissions, irrespective of whether these are submitted for regular issues or special issues.
Initial manuscript evaluation
The Editor first evaluates all manuscripts. Some manuscripts may be rejected at this stage if they are deemed insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, have poor grammar or the English language is too poor to allow scientific understanding, or are outside the aims and scope of the journal. Exceptionally, though formally within the aims and scope of JEC, some manuscripts dealing with controversial areas maybe rejected at this stage. Those that meet these minimum criteria are passed on to 2 experts for review. Editors do not typically act as reviewers of manuscripts that they are handling, except in exceptional cases when the two initial reviewers reports are contradictory and the Editor s expertise in the manuscript s subject is high.
Type of Peer Review
The reviewers remain anonymous throughout and after the reviewing process. Reviewers should not enter into direct contact with authors at any stage of the review process.
How the reviewer is selected
Reviewers are matched to the paper by the Editor according to their expertise. JEC s reviewer database is constantly being updated. JEC welcomes suggestions for reviewers from the author though these recommendations may not necessarily be followed.
Reviewer reports
Reviewers are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript: –- Is original and novel –- Is conceptually and scientifically sound –- Is methodologically sound —- Contributes significantly to the advancement of the research area –- Follows appropriate ethical guidelines –- Has results which are clearly presented and support the conclusions –- Correctly references previous relevant work
Reviewers are not expected to correct or copyedit manuscripts. Language correction is not part of the peer review process.
How long does the review process take?
Typically the manuscript will be reviewed within 8 weeks. Should the reviewers reports contradict one another or a report is unnecessarily delayed a further expert opinion will be sought. Revised manuscripts may be returned to the initial referees. The Editors may request more than one revision of a manuscript.
Final report
A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript will be sent to the author along with any recommendations made by the reviewers, and may include verbatim comments by the reviewers and Editor.
Editor s decision is final
Reviewers advise the Editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the article.
