Instructions to Authors for the preparation of a manuscript for publication in the JIMF

In order for us to maintain a consistent style and to help authors avoid errors and delays in publication we ask all authors to ensure that the style and technical requirements described below are followed in the final version of a paper submitted for publication in the JIMF. Help and further discussion of the information covered in these instructions can be found at External link http://www.elsevier.com/authors

The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.

Language: Papers must be in English, with American spelling.

General: Manuscripts must be double-spaced with wide margins. A font size of 12-point font is preferred. Text files can be a standard word-processing format (Microsoft Word is preferred). Most formatting codes are removed or replaced when the Publisher processes the article so there is no need for the author to use excessive layout styling.

Tables should be mentioned and described in the main body of the text but not inserted into the text. In the body of the text the author should indicate where the table should appear by placing the following comment in the center of a separate line at the end of the paragraph where the table is first mentioned in the text.

[Insert Table "Number" here]

Where "Number" refers to the consecutive Arabic numeral assigned to each table in the order in which they are referred to in the text. For tables created in the same word-processing file as the text each table should appear on its own page at the end of the paper. Tables created outside of the word-processing software used for the text file should not be imported or embedded into the text and the author should follow the instructions for figures.

All figures, charts or illustrations should be mentioned and described in the main body of the text but not inserted into the text. In the body of the text the author should indicate where the figure should appear by placing the following comment in the center of a separate line at the end of the paragraph where the figure is first mentioned in the text.

[Insert Figure "Number" here]

Where "Number" refers to the consecutive Arabic numeral assigned to each figure in the order in which they are referred to in the text. After the Reference Section the title, legend and captions for each figure should be listed - the complete list may appear on a single page. Each figure should be submitted in separate file. Elsevier recommends that only TIFF, EPS or PDF formats be used for figures. MS Office files (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) are also accepted provided they meet specific conditions. These conditions and other information can be found in the "Author Artwork Instructions" of External link http://www.elsevier.com/authors

The content of the text file should appear in this order:
Title Page
Main Text
Acknowledgements
Appendix
References
Figure Legends*
Tables

*Legends are used to mean the figure title and any legend or caption.

The Title Page should contain the following information: (1) Title, (2) Authors' Names, (3) Authors' Institutional Affiliations, including full postal addresses (4) Abstract of not more than 100 words, (5) JEL code; at least one classification code according to the Classification System for Journal Articles as used by the Journal of Economic Literature is required, (6) Keywords.

On the title page the corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote that contains a phone number a fax number and an e-mail address.

The main-text sections, including the introduction, should be labeled with consecutive Arabic numbers. Subsections should be numbered in italic, 2.1, 2.2 etc.
Units: Ensure that the letter "l" and the digit "1" and also the letter "O" and the digit "0" are used properly. Characters not available on your word processor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.,) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g. (alpha), @, etc., for the Greek letter ). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the text and a list of codes used should accompany the electronic manuscript.
Quotations: Quotations must correspond exactly with the original in wording, spelling, and punctuation. Page numbers must be given. Changes must be indicated: use brackets to identify insertions; use dots (...) to show omissions. Also indicate where emphasis has been added. Only quotations of over 50 words should be separated from the text; these should also be indented at beginning margin and double-spaced with page number to be shown in brackets.
Formulae and Equations: Displayed formulae and equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript as (1), (2) etc., near the right-hand margin of the page. Formulae and Equations should be punctuated the same as the text. When used extensively, symbolic notations should be listed, summarized and briefly identified in a separate table. In cases where the derivation of formulae has been abbreviated, it is of great help to the referees if the full derivation can be presented on a separate sheet (not to be published). When referring to a specific equation elsewhere in the text use the following style Eq. (1).
Capitalize the words Table, Figure, Section or Subsection when they are used in the text to refer to a specific table, figure, section or subsection.
References mentioned in the text should refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication. If the citation is a direct part of the sentence use the author's last name followed by the publication date in parentheses, for example,

More recently, Calomiris and Mason (2000) examine the question whether fundamentals can explain the survival time of banks during the great depression.

If the citation is included in parentheses in the sentence then separate the author's name and the date with a comma and separate the citations with semi colons, for example:

Along the lines of the first approach, a number of papers have tested for autocorrelation in bank failures, controlling for macroeconomic conditions (Grossman, 1993; Hasan and Dwyer, 1994; Schoenmaker, 1996).

Notes to the text should appear as footnotes at the bottom of a page (and in some cases continued on the next page.)

Acknowledgements should be placed at the end of the text and before any Appendix and before the Reference Section.

An Appendix should be used to avoid length technical discussions in the text. If the discussion is too lengthy or relevant only to a small portion of the readers the author not include it in the published paper but should mention in the published paper that the appendix is available from the author upon request.

The Reference Section should begin on a new page and be double-spaced. Citations should be listed alphabetically by authors' last name. Works by the same author should be in order of publication from the most recent to the oldest. The authors' names must be typed out in full for each and every citation. Do not number the citations. Please note that each author's name should appear as last name, followed by a comma and then first and middle initials followed by a comma. When a paper has more than one author do not include the conjunction "and" between the authors' names. For example with two authors the citation should read Obstfeld, M., Taylor, A.M., and for three authors, Spufford, P., Wilkinson, W., Tolley, S. Separate the authors' names and the year of publication with a comma.

Examples of references format for different types of publications:

For unpublished working papers:

Figure Legends: After the reference section there should be a separate page with a list of the title, legend and caption for each figure mentioned in the text and submitted in its own separate graphics file. As mentioned above the figures should not be imported into the text file. The figures should follow the requirements already mentioned above; including consecutive numbering with Arabic numerals in the order in which they are referred to in the text.

Table: Tables created by the word-processing software used for the text should appear at the end of the table. Each table should appear on a separate page and follow the requirements already mentioned above. If the author uses a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align columns instead of spaces. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters in the title or body of the table. For tables created outside the text word-processing file follow the instructions for figures and substitute the table title for figure legend.

Authors should always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety.

Proofs
Corresponding authors will be notified by email when their paper has been dispatched to the publisher. Until that time questions on status should be directed to Cornelia McCarthy, Associate Editor, at JIMFCM@fordham.edu. Once the publisher receives the paper, information on its status will be available through External link http://www.elsevier.com/authors

Approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the publisher receives the paper, a PDF file with the proof of the paper will be emailed to the corresponding author and should be returned promptly. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed.

Proofs are to be returned via email to proofcorrections@elsevier.com
