Peer Review Policy for Oral Oncology

A Journal Related to Head & Neck Oncology & Pathology
The practice of peer review attempts to ensure that good science is published. It is intended to be the objective process at the heart of good scholarly publishing and is carried out by all reputable scientific journals. Our referees, therefore, play a vital role in maintaining the increasingly high standards of Oral Oncology.

Peer Review in Oral Oncology

All manuscripts submitted to Oral Oncology are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below.

Initial manuscript evaluation

The Editor-in-Chief first evaluates all manuscripts submitted to Oral Oncology. It is rare, but it is entirely feasible for an exceptional manuscript to be accepted at this stage or for manuscripts to be rejected if they are insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, have poor grammar or English language, or are outside the aims and scope of the journals. Those that meet the criteria are reviewed by at least 2 experts.

Type of peer review

Oral Oncology employs single blind review, where the referees remain anonymous throughout the process.

Referee selection

Referees are matched to the paper according to their expertise.

Our database is constantly being updated. We request suggestions for referees from the author, although these recommendations may not be used.

Referee reports

Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript: • Is original
• Is methodologically sound
• Follows appropriate ethical guidelines
• Has results which are clearly presented and support the conclusions
• Correctly references previous relevant work

Referees are not expected to correct or copyedit manuscripts: language correction is not part of the peer review process and is the responsibility of the author.

Time taken for the review process

Manuscripts are typically reviewed within 4 weeks. If the referees' reports contradict one another or a report is unnecessarily delayed a further expert opinion may be sought or the Editor-in-Chief may make a decision.
Please note that authors may be requested to make more than one revision of a manuscript before it is accepted for publication in Oral Oncology.

Final report and decision

The final decision to accept, reject or revise the manuscript will be communicated to the author by the Editorial Office, together with any recommendations made by the referees.

Special Issues and Conference Proceedings

Please note that special issues and conference proceedings have different peer review procedures involving, for example, Guest Editors and Scientific Committees. Authors contributing to these projects will receive full details of the peer review process from the Editorial Office
