Corporate social responsibility

Information philanthropy

We’re very proud of the role we play in supporting scientists, health care providers and policymakers working all over the world to advance knowledge, eradicate disease and solve major global problems.

To this end we help to ensure that even those countries with the least resources have the opportunity to build their scientific capabilities, contribute to the global scientific knowledge and have the capacity to use science to solve real world problems. We actively partner with trusted third parties in initiatives such as the UN’s HINARI, AGORA and OARE programs. For more information about Elseviers philanthropic partnerships, visit our External link  corporate responsibility pages at External link  About Elsevier.

The Elsevier Foundation

External link  The Elsevier Foundation is a corporate foundation making grants and contributions throughout the world. Created in 2002, it supports the broader scientific, technical and medical communities we serve, as well as the many local communities where our employees live and work.

Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 40 grants worth over half a million dollars to non-profit organisations that have knowledge-centred missions, values and programmes consistent with our corporate mission. However, the Foundation focuses on three specific programme areas to optimise financial resources and maximise the impact in the communities we serve.

The programmes are:

The Innovative Library Access (ILA) Programme, which awards grants to library programmes in the developing world for innovative systems and services that improve access to STM information.

The Elsevier Scholars Programme, which recognises and awards young scientists and academic clinicians for outstanding research.

The Elsevier Employee Matching Gift Programme, which matches employee donations on a one-for-one basis to the charity of their choice.

The Environment

Caring for the External link  environment is a fundamental objective for us. Elsevier lives out this commitment through good management practices and by meeting all applicable legislation. We seek to make continuous improvements to reduce our impact on all aspects of the environment.

We have a set of environmental goals. They are:

- Conserve and set targets to improve our use of energy, and raw materials as appropriate

- Reduce waste to a minimum

- Recycle materials to the maximum

- Reduce our use of energy and natural resources whenever reasonably practicable

- Avoid pollution of air, water and land (including avoiding waste tipping in landfill sites) whenever possible

- Improve the work environment

- Support local community environmental initiatives

- Seek to achieve environmental excellence in all our business operations

- Discuss environmental issues regularly at the highest levels of the company

- Train and regularly consult with employees on good environmental practice

- Meet all anticipated legislation

- Liaise with suppliers and customers to facilitate best environmental practice throughout all aspects of our business whether direct or related

- Sustain and protect the environment as a major business objective.

RE Cares

Elsevier is committed to working together with the communities we serve to advance scholarship and improve lives. Our involvement focuses on education for disadvantaged young people and additional community initiatives of importance to local employees.

External link  RE Cares, our parent company Reed Elsevier’s global community programme, encourages and supports all Elsevier employees to become involved as volunteers. Corporate responsibility is not only about grants, it is about being part of the community in the widest sense. Through local community champions and strong local programmes, we support our employees in their community-related activities. This inter-relationship is expressed in our company’s Latin motto, Non Solus, "not alone". To support our employees in these activities, we offer two days off per calendar year, allowing them to participate in and contribute to a qualified non-profit organisation.
