Description
The practice of Sports Medicine includes aspects of multiple specialties and Infectious Disease (ID) is no exception. The care of athletes requires a broad knowledge base in ID. The ability to participate in sport, return to play, spread of ID to other participants and prevention of ID are important to consider in the care of the athlete. This issue will examine multiple issues in ID pertinent in sports medicine including acute and chronic ID in the athlete, ID topics in extreme sports, prevention of ID in sports medicine, exercise and the immune system and ID issues pertinent to the international athlete. This issue will provide current information and recommendations to guide the sports medicine physician in dealing with ID in the athlete.
