Quality of Service (QoS) provision remains always a challenge for both academia and industry. Considering a user centric environment, we are asked to provide services at any time, for anyone, anywhere in a secure environment and in an invisible way. In this theater of service provision, there are numerous users with highly diversified needs and profiles, utilizing heterogeneous networking environments. Along these lines the notion of Quality of Service considers the delivery chain that is comprised of the actual user, the service, network and content providers, the terminal equipments, the access and core networks, both wired and wireless, in modern highly heterogeneous and ubiquitous environments. Towards a well integrated heterogeneous networks infrastructure performance evaluation plays a key role during the design and the operation phases with many interesting and important performance engineering issues yet to be resolved.
This Special Issue of EJOR is devoted to presenting the advances towards the performance evaluation of QoS-aware Heterogeneous Systems as depicted in research activities from professionals, academics and researchers. Contributions are solicited on (but not restricted to) the following subject categories:
Heterogeneous networks
Cellular, wireless and mobile communications
Integration of wired and wireless networks
Performance modeling and simulation
Quantitative methods and tools
Traffic modeling, characterization and engineering
Quality of Service
Performance aware network design, planning and dimensioning
Network management systems
Services and applications
Testbeds and measurements
