Elsevier offers several e-mail alerting services through ScienceDirect:

ScienceDirect Alerts
  • Journal issue alerts
  • Topic alerts
  • Search alerts
  • Citation alerts

Journal issue alerts

A journal issue alert notifies you by e-mail when a new issue of a particular journal of your choice becomes available on ScienceDirect.

How to create a journal issue alert:

  1. Click on External link  My Alerts to login or External link  create a new profile
  2. External link  Select the journals you are interested in to begin receiving journal issue alerts.


The journal issue alerts are free for all users after a simple registration procedure.

Topic alerts

A topic alert notifies you by e-mail when a predefined topic related search retrieves new results.

How to create a topic alert:

  1. External link  Click on Register to select you favourite topic
  2. Fill out the form and click on the 'Activate Alert'

Search alerts

A search alert notifies you by e-mail when your stored search retrieves new results

How to create a search alert:

  1. Define and run a External link  Search.
  2. Save the search as a Search Alert.

The search alerts are available for Licensed ScienceDirect users (will be automatically recognised as belonging to an institute that has a subscription).

Citation alerts

A citation alert notifies you by e-mail when a selected article is cited by new articles added to ScienceDirect.

How to create a citation alert:

  1. Find the article of interest by running a External link  search or External link  browsing a journal issue.  
  2. While viewing the article, click the Save as Citation Alert link.  

The citation alerts are available for Licensed ScienceDirect users (will be automatically recognised as belonging to an institute that has a subscription).
