Description


International Journal of Fatigue is dedicated entirely to the full range of scientific and technological issues associated with fatigue. The scope of the journal includes the spectrum of characterization, testing, and modeling of degradation processes under cyclic loading, commonly referred to as fatigue. This includes compromise of functionality with cycling, in addition to formation of cracks and other damage phenomena. Phenomena of interest range from the atomic level to engineering structures or devices, including all classes of materials and material systems. We encourage publication of studies that combine understanding and characterization of material fatigue mechanisms with physically-based models to address future needs for more predictive fatigue mitigation and design.

International Journal of Fatigue provides a timely forum for information and discussion for engineers, researchers, and educators engaged in the important subject of fatigue. The technical integrity of the journal is maintained by an international Editorial Advisory Board of leading experts and by the review of all papers (including those in special issues and supplements) by at least two peers. Timely publication is emphasized (typically within a month of acceptance), and all papers are available electronically as part of the renowned 'ScienceDirect' on-line service of Elsevier.

Typical subjects discussed in International Journal of Fatigue address:
  • Novel fatigue testing and characterization methods (new kinds of fatigue tests, critical evaluation of existing methods, in situ measurement of fatigue degradation, non-contact field measurements)
  • Multiaxial fatigue and complex loading effects of materials and structures, exploring state-of-the-art concepts in degradation under cyclic loading
  • Modeling (including degradation processes and related driving forces, multiscale/multi-resolution methods, computational hierarchical and concurrent methods for coupled component and material responses, novel methods for notch root analysis, fracture mechanics, damage mechanics, crack growth kinetics, life prediction and durability, and prediction of stochastic fatigue behavior reflecting microstructure and service conditions)
  • Understanding the influence or manufacturing and processing route on fatigue degradation, and embedding this understanding in more predictive schemes for mitigation and design
  • Prognosis and damage state awareness (including sensors, monitoring, methodology, interactive control, accelerated methods, data interpretation)
  • Applications of technologies associated with fatigue and their implications for structural integrity and reliability. This includes issues related to design, operation and maintenance, i.e., life cycle engineering
  • Smart materials and structures that can sense and mitigate fatigue degradation
  • Fatigue of devices and structures at small scales, including effects of process route and surfaces/interfaces


Combined and coupled behaviours that affect thermo-chemical-mechanical degradation processes under cyclic loading conditions are also included in the scope of the journal.

The journal particularly welcomes review papers as well as suggestions for special issues either in topical areas in fatigue of materials or containing selected papers from prominent international conferences.

The International Fracture Group and the Canadian Organizing Committee for the 12th International Conference on Fracture (ICF 12) invite all those interested in all aspects of fracture research to participate in this conference to be held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from July 12-17, 2009. The Conference will cover the latest developments in mechanics and mechanisms of fracture, fatigue and strength of solids.

International Committee on Aeronautical Fatigue, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 25-29 May 2009.
The two-day conference consists of reviews of aeronautical fatigue activities presented by the national delegates of the 14 member nations of ICAF. It is followed by the three-day symposium that involves specialist papers presented by authors with design, manufacturing, airworthiness regulations, operations and research backgrounds. The ICAF 2009 symposium will be based on the theme "Bridging the gap between theory and operational practice". The last morning of the symposium will be dedicated to workshops with specialists providing in-depth lectures for the benefit of both novice and advanced workers in the field of aeronautical fatigue.
