No Double Dipping PolicyElsevier’s policy is not to charge subscribers for open access content and when calculating subscription prices only to take into account content published under the subscription model.
For subscription journals which offer open access options to authors:
- Adjustments in individual journal list prices reflect a number of factors including growth in the number of articles published; impact factor; usage; and other revenue streams such as commercial contributions from advertising, reprints, and supplements.
- The uptake of open access options in subscription journals remains small relative to these other factors and thus has a very small impact on journal list prices. In 2012, Elsevier published a total of 1,847 sponsored open access articles. In other words less than 1% of the articles in our subscription titles were sponsored open access articles.
- By comparison the number of articles published under the subscription model increases by around 3% -4% each year.
- Elsevier amends its journal list prices to account for each and every sponsored open access article. Our subscription customers are not charged for open access articles – we do not double dip.
