Policies

Overview of key polices

Elsevier works in partnership with the research community, librarians, funders and other stakeholders to develop polices to help our customers and clarify our position on key issues related to access and open access.  These include:

Accessibility policy

Elsevier consistently and proactively endeavors to make our products fully accessible to all users, regardless of physical abilities. That commitment reflects the growing customer need for accessibility of our books and online products, and our focus on customers, innovation and partnership with the science and health communities we serve.

Article posting policy

Elsevier wants to ensure a proper balance between the scholarly rights which authors retain (or are granted/transferred back in some cases) and the rights granted to Elsevier that are necessary to support our mix of business models. We routinely analyze and modify our policies to ensure we are responding to authors’ needs and concerns, and the concerns generally of the research and scholarly communities.

Author Rights

Text & Data Mining Policy

Elsevier has developed this policy to assist customers who wish to mine our content.

No Double Dipping Policy PDF

Elsevier has a strict policy not to charge subscribers for open access content.

Funding Body Policies

Elsevier has engaged with several funding organizations around the world and have developed agreements and policies to support the open access needs of these organizations.

Independent Digital Archives

In 2002 Elsevier entered into an agreement with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands), which agreed to be a digital archive for all Elsevier journals. This archive is available now for onsite access and would be made generally available to the public on a remote basis should we (or a successor) no longer be providing access.

Institutional Agreements

For institutions with open access mandates or policies, Elsevier is working in partnership to test and learn more about how best to support sustainable open access.
