The research world is becoming increasingly global and competitive. This, combined with the growing recognition that scholarly research plays an important role in driving sustainable economic development, has put pressure on academic, government and industrial research facilities to optimize their resources, demonstrate their return on investment and showcase their achievements.
The international research economy is so vast and complex, with more than 7 million researchers worldwide, that an evidence-base is increasingly required to supplement insights drawn from personal knowledge and peer review to provide sound analyses of research landscapes
For the past three years, Elsevier has provided insights into research competencies through SciVal Spotlight, and the ability to evaluate research groups with SciVal Strata. However, through close cooperation with leading research institutions, Elsevier decided to fully integrate the core capabilities of these first-generation SciVal tools to create a new tool that better serves the needs of customers. The new SciVal provides a comprehensive set of analytical capabilities and functionalities embedded in an intuitive interface.
SciVal, based on Scopus data, enables users to configure, visualize and export information according to their personal needs and preferences. It allows them to benchmark their research performance relative to their peers as well as to global and domestic standards. The results can be used to help answer the enormously diverse questions faced in the management of research, which require identifying research strengths and weaknesses, uncovering current collaborations and finding potential new partners, and modeling future scenarios.
The new SciVal received a rave review by Outsell Insights yesterday. Rich Kreisman wrote:
… the new SciVal demonstrates its extraordinary utility: The system calculates complex benchmarking of more than 4,600 research institutions' outputs on highly specific scientific topics in seconds. The product is packaged in an extremely simple user interface. It elegantly allows users to create and share insightful charts, graphs, and diagrams in a way that prior versions of SciVal did not.

Elsevier will host three webinars to show how SciVal is already being used by leading research institutions across the globe. The webinars are free, but registration is required. Login details will be sent after registration. Webinar attendees will be offered a week's complimentary trial access on an individual basis to the new SciVal.

- Insights and experiences from users of SciVal

Iris Kisjes (@Kisjes) has worked at Elsevier for seven years, the past four in communications. She is currently Senior Corporate Relations Manager, based in Amsterdam. She has a keen interest in the knowledge economy, especially in relation to the valorization of science and the longevity of the higher education system.
Dr. Lisa Colledge is Senior Manager of Strategic Alliances for Elsevier's Global Academic Relations team. She is an expert in the use of metrics that provide insights into the research performance of universities, researchers and journals. She was on the SciVal team that developed SciVal Strata. Prior to joining Elsevier, she conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Edinburgh. She holds both a DPhil and an MA from the University of Oxford.
Ikuko Oba is Marketing Manager for SciVal Strategic Marketing at Elsevier, responsible for marketing and communication initiatives of SciVal and Analytical Services. She joined Elsevier in 2005 as Product Sales Manager of Scopus and gradually expanded her sales portfolio to cover Embase, Engineering Village, Reaxys and SciVal. Prior to joining Elsevier, she provided enterprise solution as sales at a financial service company, and as a Director of Overseas Division at a Software distribution company.
