Nursing education has evolved rapidly over the years, and faculty must prepare students to manage the vast complexities of the nursing profession and patient care. That includes continually mastering new technology for nursing education and clinical practice.
Many nurse educators have become master teachers, providing a stimulating environment for this kind of education — one that combines "hands-on" clinical learning with the high-level thinking students will need to provide the best services for patients and their families.
To recognize the important work of nurse educators, Elsevier is holding its fourth annual Elsevier Leading Stars in Education (ELSIE) Awards.
The ELSIE Awards recognize the work of three exceptional nursing faculty members who show extraordinary skill, innovation and effectiveness in promoting student learning, professionalism and self-confidence.
"The ELSIE Awards are a great way for faculty to recognize their peers, and for Elsevier to celebrate excellence in Nursing Education," said Cathy Bailey, Executive Director of Consultation and Implementation Services for Education at Elsevier. "Nursing educators work hard every day. They put their heart and soul into their work to inspire new nurses, and they deserve special recognition for their efforts."
Nominations are being accepted through October 24, 2014 in three categories: Simulation, Clinical Education and Active Learning in the Classroom.
- Simulation — Nursing educators using simulation are instrumental in teaching students real-world patient care in safe environments using low- and high-fidelity simulation experience and electronic health record documentation. This award recognizes faculty or lab coordinators who use simulation to inspire students and make an impact on student outcomes.
- Clinical Education — Developing strategies to better prepare and debrief students, while helping nursing staff better understand how to help aspiring nurses, requires creativity and dedication. This award recognizes faculty who are determined to make each clinical encounter a valuable and memorable learning experience for students
- Active Learning in the Classroom — Innovative educators have flipped the classroom to help students work together not only to acquire knowledge, but also to learn how to apply their knowledge as a practicing nurse. This award recognizes faculty who have developed unique strategies to actively engage students in the classroom.
The 2015 award winners will receive a cash prize of $500 and all expenses paid attendance to the 2015 Elsevier Faculty Development Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they will be honored at the award ceremony on January 4. All nominations will be reviewed and judged by a panel of experienced nursing education professionals.

Eligibility: Nominees should be full-time educators teaching in nursing programs. Nursing faculty must be nominated by the Nursing Dean, Director, Level/Semester Coordinator, or equivalent.

Elsevier Connect Contributors
Kristen Conrad serves as a Marketing Coordinator for Elsevier Education on the Traditional and Lifelong Learning Team. She has helped market the Elsevier Educator awards for the past two years and was a key contributor in the new branding. Kristen has worked closely with the Elsevier Faculty Development Conference and Elevate Outcomes with HESI Conference. She is based in St. Louis.
Cheryl Mee, MSN, MBA, RN, has been a nurse for over 30 years and is a Manager of Faculty Development in the Implementation and Consultation Department at Elsevier. The focus of her work is helping faculty better understand and implement HESI Review and Testing products in order to improve student outcomes. She has worked in Health Science publishing for 20 years in various roles in including Editor in Chief of a clinical nursing journal and VP of US Nursing and Health Professions Journals. As a nurse educator she has taught nursing classes in graduate and undergraduate programs. She is based in Philadelphia.
