For Authors

Access policies

Open Access LogoElsevier has developed several policies to assist our customers to understand our position on key issues within our Universal Access programme. These are:

Accessibility policy

Elsevier consistently and proactively endeavors to make our products fully accessible to all users, regardless of physical abilities. That commitment reflects the growing customer need for accessibility of our books and online products, and our focus on customers, innovation and partnership with the science and health communities we serve.

Article posting policy

Elsevier wants to ensure a proper balance between the scholarly rights which authors retain (or are granted/transferred back in some cases) and the rights granted to Elsevier that are necessary to support our mix of business models. We routinely analyze and modify our policies to ensure we are responding to authors’ needs and concerns, and the concerns generally of the research and scholarly communities.

Author & User Rights

Elsevier requests transfers of copyright, or in some cases exclusive rights, from its journal authors in order to ensure that we have the rights necessary for the proper administration of electronic rights and online dissemination of journal articles, authors and their employers retain (or are granted/transferred back) significant scholarly rights in their work. This policy outlines all of the rights involved and answers key questions on what authors and users need to know.

Content Mining Policy

Content Mining concerns the automatic processing of large collections of various forms of data and information to identify, organize and perform analysis in order to determine possible links within the content that may not be obvious on initial inspection. Elsevier has developed this policy to assist customers who wish to mine our content.

Double Dipping Policy PDF

Elsevier’s policy is not to charge subscribers for open access content and when calculating subscription prices only to take into account content published under the subscription model. Elsevier has developed this policy to ensure that we do not "double dip."

Funding Body Policies

Elsevier has engaged with several funding organizations around the world and have developed agreements and policies to support the open access needs of these organizations.

Independent Digital Archives

In 2002 Elsevier entered into an agreement with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands), which agreed to be a digital archive for all Elsevier journals. This archive is available now for onsite access and would be made generally available to the public on a remote basis should we (or a successor) no longer be providing access.
