Global
Dissemination
More
access than ever before...
Scientists read around 50% more articles per year than 25 years ago,
and read from almost twice as many journals due to electronic
distribution platforms.
Elsevier led the transition
towards wider electronic dissemination with the launch of our online
journal platform ScienceDirect. Launched in 1997, ScienceDirect is now
available to 11 million user worldwide and has had over 1 billion
full-text article downloads.

By delivering world-class
information and innovative tools to researchers, students, educators
and
practitioners worldwide, we help them become increasingly more
productive in their work.
Unsurpassed
electronic products
Elsevier has a dedicated usability department which continuously
re-evaluates and benchmarks our electronic products against industry
competitors to ensure they remain the best in their class.
ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect is Elsevier's full-text platform which provides access to
over 8 million articles, 80 million abstracts, more than 2,000 Elsevier
and third party journals and an expanding books programme. In addition,
free linking to content from hundreds of other STM publishers via the
CrossRefTM initiative.
ScienceDirect offers researchers
remote, desktop access; fast search; interlinked articles and
references, and email alert services.
We are continuously looking at
ways of using new technology to meet the information needs of research
communities. Some recent innovations include:
- 4,000 eBooks now online - on
one platform you now search seamlessly across journals, books and
reference works
- related articles function
where more articles will be recommended based on your searches and the
articles you’re viewing
- spell checker
- supplementary data – ScienceDirect can support animations, movies, high resolution images, background data sets, sound clips and more.
Examples include:
- An acoustic analysis of ‘happy-tensing’ in the Queen's Christmas broadcasts (movie)
Journal of Phonetics, Volume 34, Issue 4, October 2006
- Glottal stop, glottalized resonants, and pharyngeals: A reinterpretation with evidence from a laryngoscopic study of Nuuchahnulth (Nootka) (audio)
Journal of Phonetics, Volume 33, Issue 4, October 2005
- Valency in classifier predicates: A syntactic analysis (movie)
Lingua, Volume 117, Issue 7, July 2007
- “Academic English” in the 7th grade: Broadening the lens, expanding access (image)
Journal of English for Academic Purposes, Volume 5, Issue 4, October 2006

Scopus

Scopus is the largest abstract
and citation database of peer-reviewed
literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track, analyze
and visualize research. Designed and developed in conjunction with over
600 users and librarians worldwide, Scopus improves research
productivity for users and librarians.
Its unique database contains
abstracts and references from over 15,000
titles from 4,000 different publishers and won the International
Information Industry Award for best Scientific, Technical and Medical
(STM) Information Product in December 2005.
Scopus provides access to over
2,850 social science titles (back to
1996) and indexes all titles currently included in the Thomson Social
Science Citation Index.
Scopus users can now search an
additional 4,500
titles from ProQuest’s leading database in the areas of arts
and humanities & social sciences including Linguistic and
Language Behaviour Abstracts, back to 1962.

Scirus

Search represents the driving
force
behind the web, and Scirus is one of the most comprehensive
science-focused search engines providing free support to researchers,
practitioners and students worldwide.
In 2006 Scirus received the
‘Best Speciality Search Engine WebAward’ for the
third
consecutive year from the Web Marketing Association (WMA).
Scirus is currently developing
‘Topic pages’, which provide an informal
communication and
collaborative platform for scientific authors. These freely available
pages are dedicated to specific topics and provide introductory
information about the subject with related links both to peer reviewed
and non-peer reviewed material. The pages also offer authors the
opportunity to increase their visibility within a particular field of
research.
