Environmental Impact Assessment Review

Environmental Impact Assessment Review:
A Comparison of Carbon Calculators

A Comparison of Carbon Calculators
By J. Paul Padgett, Anne C. Steinemann, James H. Clarke, Michael P. Vandenbergh
Environmental Impact Assessment Review, Volume 28, Issues 2-3 February-April 2008, Pages 106-115

International attention to carbon dioxide emissions is turning to an individual's contribution, or “carbon footprint.” Calculators that estimate an individual's CO2 emissions have become more prevalent on the internet. Even with similar inputs, however, these calculators can generate varying results, often by as much as several metric tons per annum per individual activity. This paper examines the similarities and differences among ten US-based calculators.

New Editors-in-Chief
We are pleased to welcome new Editors-in-Chief for Biological Conservation and Ecological Economics.

Biological Conservation

Richard Primack, next to the statue of famous American philosopher and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau Thoreau kept a detailed record of plant flowering times around Walden Pond in Concord; by following the same species Primack has been able to show that plants are now flowering one week earlier due to a warming climate.Biological Conservation
Richard Primack, who recently took over as Editor-in-Chief of Biological Conservation, is a Professor at Boston University where he studies the effects of climate change on plants and birds and long-term changes in tropical forests. He also works with scientists from other countries to produce locally adapted translations of his two textbooks in conservation biology.

Ecological Economics

Ecological EconomicsRichard Howarth
Richard Howarth joined us in January 2008, succeeding Cutler Cleveland.Richard is the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth College. His work emphasizes the theory of environmental policy analysis with applications to topics such as energy use, climate change, and ecological conservation. He is committed to the view that effectively addressing environmental problems requires a transdisciplinary approach that integrates the insights of ecology, economics, ethics, and the social sciences.

Ecological Indicators

Ecological Indicators welcomes Short Note articles

Authors submitting papers on the application of existing indicators or indicator systems are invited to send their articles in the form of a Short Note article. This will shorten the reviewing process and will ensure quicker publication times.

Papers focussing on demonstrations, tests or minor methodological improvements on the basis of regional investigations as well as condensed articles on new topics concerning ecological indication are suitable articles to be submitted in the format of short note articles. The papers should not exceed the length of ten manuscript pages, including figures, tables and references.

Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate DynamicsAtmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics
An Introductory Text
By John Marshall and R. Alan Plumb

For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed.

Dynamics of El Nino & Southern OscillationAn Introduction to the Dynamics of El Nino & the Southern Oscillation
By Allan J. Clarke

Many scientists either working on the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) problem or its many applications have not been trained in both the equatorial ocean and atmospheric dynamics necessary to understand it. This book seeks to overcome this difficulty by providing a step by step introduction to ENSO, helping the upper level graduate student or research scientist to learn quickly the ENSO basics and be up to date with the latest ENSO research.
