In 2003 Elsevier launched FLASH with the aim of improving
awareness of breakthroughs in science and medicine among key
health and science journalists in English-speaking markets and
bringing science and medicine to a broader audience.
What is FLASH?
FLASH is a monthly news alert for journalists showcasing Elsevier
research and raising mainstream awareness of breakthroughs in
science and medicine. Distributed in the US, UK, Netherlands
and China, FLASH includes a short synopsis of 8-10 groundbreaking
new research stories from Elsevier journals. The service is
tailored for use by a select group of health and science journalists
in mainstream consumer media.
In 2005, 20% of the FLASHed articles were picked up by mainstream
media including The Times, USA Today, The New York Times,
BBC Online and Discovery Channel News.
FLASH news highlights research from the serious (breast cancer,
grief councelling and HIV) to the whimsical.
If I send an article to FLASH what
happens?
- Editors nominate articles which they feel would be of interest
to the mainstream media, adding a few sentences as to why.
- Our corporate relations department selects 8-10 articles
each month to release which they feel would be of interest
to a non specialist audience. If an article is selected a
synopsis is written which is then sent to the author of the
article for approval prior to release.
- A monthly ‘tip sheet’ is then sent to a selected
group of over 200 international journalists including the
8-10 selected articles along with the synopses and a link
to the article online. Journalists receiving FLASH can access
the full-text articles courtesy of ScienceDirect.
- If an article is picked up reporters are asked to credit
the journal as the source and if published online they are
asked to link to www.elsevier.com
- Elsevier monitors which articles are picked up by the media
and this, along with a copy of the article itself, is fed
back to the authors and editors involved.
How do I submit
an article to FLASH?
If you have an article which you feel will be of interest to
a broader audience please contact Marléne Hamers m.hamers@elsevier.com
In your email include the full title of the article and add
a couple of sentences, no more, stating why you think the article
would be suitable for FLASH.
