News from our Editor-in-Chief September, 2009

Dennis VanceI am not opposed to Translational Research but I am getting tired of hearing that phrase. The proposed director for NIH, Francis Collins, notes there will be an emphasis on translational research. To be fair, he also stated that he would continue to “empower the biomedical research community”. But all this discussion about translational research often fails to recognize that it is the basic, curiosity driven research on which eventual translational research depends. If there is no innovative fundamental research, there will be nothing to translate.

BBA - Proteins and Proteomics on ScienceDirect(Opens new window)Protein Bioinformatics - submissions are welcome

BBA Proteins and Proteomics has revised its Aims & Scope statement to more explicitly welcome manuscript submissions in the growing area of PROTEIN BIOINFORMATICS. Please find the revised scope statement below:

BBA's Proteins and Proteomics section covers protein structure conformation and dynamics; protein folding; protein-ligand interactions; enzyme mechanisms, models and kinetics; protein physical properties and spectroscopy; and proteomics and bioinformatics analyses of protein structure, protein function, or protein regulation.

UniProtKB Protein identifiers:

BBA Proteins and Proteomics Authors:  in future submissions please provide unique Protein identifiers in text.

UniProtKB Protein ID’s can now be hyperlinked in the final html text on ScienceDirect.  Authors are encouraged to list UniProtKB numbers in their text and tables. The typesetters will recognise those ID’s and insert a hyperlink during the production process. Readers will enjoy the benefit of easy navigation between databases and unambiguous information concerning the protein studied.

Fraudulent emails in circulation:

It has come to our attention that fraudulent emails are being distributed in the scientific community. These spam emails use fake publisher email addresses and attempt to appear as official communications from the publisher. The fraudulent e-mail messages are generally called "Manuscript Submission", “Call for Papers”, “Editorial/Reviewer Appointment” or “European-Elsevier Scholarships” and are typically sent using e-mail accounts supported by Gmail, Hotmail or other free e-mail providers. New Executive Editors

BBA Molecular Cell Research

Anita H. Corbett New Executive Editor BBA Molecular Cell Research (IF 4.893)

BBA Molecular Cell Research gratefully acknowledges Erika Holzbaur’s excellent contribution to the journal and it’s high impact factor, and welcomes Professor Anita Corbett as new Executive Editor of BBAMCR.

Anita H. Corbett received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry from Colgate University and her PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University.  She was a post-doctoral fellow at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School where she first developed an interest in macromolecular transport between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.  She joined the faculty in the Biochemistry Department at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA USA in 1997.  She is currently a Professor of Biochemistry at Emory.  Her laboratory studies macromolecular transport into and out of the nucleus including protein import and mRNA processing/export.  The laboratory uses budding yeast to study these evolutionarily conserved processes but also employs both Drosophila and cultured cells.

BBA Biomembrane - volume 1788, issue 8   Yechiel Shai BBA Biomembranes welcomes new Executive Editor

BBA – Biomembranes is happy to announce that Professor Yechiel Shai has been found willing to join as Executive Editor of BBA Biomembranes, starting July 1streplacing Jean-Marie Ruysschaert, whose contribution is hereby greatly acknowledged and will now step down.

Yechiel Shai is a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Department of Biological Chemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science. He received a BSc. in Chemistry in 1977 from Bar-Ilan University, MSc in Organic Chemistry in 1979 and Ph.D. in Peptide Chemistry in 1985 both from the Weizmann Institute of Science. He then carried out postdoctoral research on molecular recognition at the National Institute of Science, Bethesda until 1988, when he took a position as an investigator at the Department of Membrane Research at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The names of editorial boardmembers are listed on the inside cover of a journal. For many, this is the only thing that identifies boardmembers. As editors of BBA-Proteins and  Proteomics, we thought it would be informative to introduce some of our section editors and highlight aspects of their research. In this Special Issue, review articles and original contributions are compiled for a number of the boardmemberswerely upon for their expertise
in the review process. The editors are selected for their expertise and are all outstanding scientists in their respective field.

Following this brief introduction, you will find pictures and short biographies of the contributing editors. Note that the editors come from North America, Europe and Asia, reflecting the international flavor of BBA. It is our hope that you will find the articles in this Special Issue interesting and stimulating. We look forward to obtaining feedback on the issue.
