CAPES to Provide Scopus Access to Brazilian Researchers
Scopus Selected for its Comprehensive, Multidisciplinary Coverage
Amsterdam – May 25, 2007 – Scopus®, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research, and the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) announced an agreement to make Scopus available to 44 of Brazil’s leading universities and research institutes. Scopus was selected for its comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage.
"In signing with Scopus, CAPES fulfils its commitment to make available to Brazil’s scientific and technological communities a powerful tool that provides access to state-of-the-art knowledge from all over the world. Scopus is the largest multidisciplinary database on scientific publications and it substantially increases the number of journals that may be reached and viewed by our scientists," said CAPES President Professor Jorge Guimarães in a statement at the signing ceremony held at the Brazilian Ministry of Education.
Another factor driving CAPES’ interest in Scopus was the database’s research performance measurement capabilities and its potential to further the scientific development of Brazil. Professor Guimarães added: "Scopus offers the possibility to quickly and precisely access innumerable data on the development and advancement of our science and the highlights of our schooling and makes it possible to compare with other countries. Finally, in making available to our researchers, graduate students and their mentors one more service with free access we are supporting the academic community and therefore contributing to the development of our country."
Jaco Zijlstra, Scopus Director said: "We are proud to have been selected to join CAPES’ already impressive body of scientific resources and to provide CAPES and their research community with the tools they need to further the advancement of science in Brazil."

Founded in 1951, CAPES assists the Brazilian Ministry of Education in the formulation of national policies related to post-graduate study. Through CAPES, the Brazilian government provides a beneficial service to Brazil’s academic community: the Publications Gateway. Created in 2000 by CAPES, the gateway is one of the greatest bases of scientific information in the world. Its goal is to reduce regional imbalances by providing free access to quality scientific and technological information to scientists, professors and students in 188 universities and research institutes.
Covering the world’s research literature, Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research. Scopus is designed and developed with over 300 users and librarians internationally. Its unique database contains abstracts and references from over 15,000 peer reviewed journals from 4,000 publishers worldwide, ensuring broad interdisciplinary coverage. In addition, Scopus not only offers users citation information about the articles covered, but also integrates web & patent searches directly from its clean and simple interface. Direct links to full-text articles, library resources and other applications like reference management software, make Scopus quicker, easier and more comprehensive to use than any other literature research tool.
