Elsevier welcomes Youngsuk ''Y.S.'' Chi

Amsterdam, 1 June 2005 - Leading scientific publisher Elsevier is delighted to announce the appointment of Youngsuk ''Y.S.'' Chi, an accomplished figure in international publishing, to head the company’s global academic and customer relations. Reporting to CEO Erik Engstrom, Y.S. will become Vice Chairman at Elsevier.

Elsevier has recently restructured its operations to ensure that its customer service delivery will match its reputation for world-class scientific and medical content. This commitment underscores Elsevier’s recognition of the importance of understanding its customer base and more closely aligning itself with its customer communities to better fulfill their needs. Y.S. will be at the forefront of strengthening relationships with all of Elsevier’s key external stakeholders around the globe.

Y.S. brings a strong track record in the arena of publishing services, including large-scale fulfillment and delivery operations, as well as innovative e-publishing activities. At the Ingram Book Group he was Chief Operating Officer, and subsequently held several President and CEO positions at Ingram Distribution Holding, the parent company of Ingram Book Group. During his time with Ingram Book Group, he introduced new distribution and inventory systems which dramatically improved productivity and customer fulfillment. He also co-founded Lightning Source Inc. the industry’s first print-on-demand distributor and e-Book delivery services provider, managing 75,000 digitized titles and establishing an undisputed industry-leading position.

Most recently as Chairman of Random House Asia, Y.S. demonstrated strong business-building skills and established worldwide contacts that enabled the company to become the leading Japanese and Korean trade publisher. His unique ability to build partnerships in Asia will help Elsevier to nurture the growing scientific and medical publishing arena in these important markets.

Y.S. came of age personally and professionally in multiple cultures. With American Express International, he was located in the U.S., Mexico, England, France, and Singapore. He later headed up the European operations of Ingram Micro Europe in Belgium and as General Manager of Asia Pacific, he led Ingram Micro's Asian businesses from California and Singapore.

Y.S. has an abiding involvement with university and academic endeavors. He was recently granted a major honor when he was appointed to Princeton University's Board of Trustees. Y.S. also serves as a trustee of Princeton University Press and as a member of the Council of Princeton University Communities and the Princeton East Asian Studies Advisory Council. Earlier he was an advisory board member for the New York Academy of Science. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, where he graduated cum laude, and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.
